Smoky Jo’s

I learnt all about smoking food last Sunday. Well I was concentrating on getting the story but if I didn’t have another agenda I would certainly have a go now.   It is clear that Jo and Georgina of Smoky Jo’s are passionate about food, and in particular, smoked food. What started out as…

1 day in the life of Andy, Sarah, Lily and Boris

Andy is an old friend. I first met him when he came to my studio as a fresh faced, ponytail wearing eighteen year old. He was keen to get into photography and had already had some training on weddings and done a stint in a mini lab in Brighton.   I took Andy on…

Andrew Perkins - Not often I get to be this side of the camera. You made it easy as I knew you would and you have produced images the we will cherish forever, thanks Steve.

My Mum and Dad…

As wedding photographers we are used to photographing happy events. We are very lucky to be invited to what is usually the happiest day of people’s lives. We like to capture all the emotions of the occasion, but the one that shines through most is joy.   That’s not the way life is all the…

Jo Hampson - This is utterly amazing. Great photographs and what a story they tell. Wonderful people – so gentle and courageous. A bit of a tear jerker – but brilliant!

Rob Clay - My parents are in a similar way. My dad has had a series of brain seizures, which can knock him unconscious for hours, and worry us all to death. Then he pops back, and is as good as usual. He too is a carer for my mum who also has Alzheimer’s. She is happy enough too in her own little world, but names are already a struggle for her, and she forgets what she has done even five minutes ago. It is heartbreaking to watch. We want our parents to live forever, but know that when they are in their Eighties, our time left with them is extremely limited, and it hurts like hell. I too live two hours away from them, and each time, I pre-mourn them both a little for hours after.
I think I may have to document them the way you have your parents. I have odd snaps and snippets of video, but it is easy to forget the minutiae of their everyday lives. Thank you for your slideshow, although it has made me feel terribly sad for our loved ones, and their daily struggles, and the inevitable which we all have to face.

Kevin Mullins - This is a powerful piece Steven and a timely reminder to all of us that life revolves around our families. A lovely portrait of your mum and I wish her and your dad the best for a comfortable and long future.

steve - Thank you Jo and Kevin. Rob, don’t put it off.

Lauren Ashworth - This is so beautiful Steven. These pictures made me think about what marriage is all about – loving and caring for each other for the rest of your lives. I feel so privileged to have you photographing our wedding and I hope that Jonny and I are still looking after each other in our eighties. I am so sorry for your loss.

New Head Chef at Linthwaite House Hotel

We are often at The Linthwaite House Hotel for weddings. It’s just up the road from our Bowness studio and I’ve known the owner, Mike Bevan, for years, in fact I photographed him in my Kendal studio, that’s at least 6 years ago I reckon it’s more like 10.  Chatting to Mike at the vegetable…

Barn Wedding - It was such a great works for all the chefs in this hotel, keep it up. This place is one of the nicest place for wedding venue, thanks for sharing this to us. Looking forward for more updates.

Martin Hambleton - Lovely, lovely work. I get a real impression of the blood, sweat and tears that (hopefully, not literally) go into running a successful kitchen.

For once, I prefer the colour work – great processing on these.

Rob Blackwood - Absolutely love these photos, you have really captured the feel of the kitchen, the lighting is amazing.

Sam O’Callaghan - Very proud sister. Well done Chris!! x

Alex Kilbee Documentary Wedding Photographer - Very nice work Steven! The standout shot for me is the anti-penultimate one (third from last for the uneducated :D , sums up everything in one shot. I think we can all relate to that feeling after a gig!

Kate sassanelli - Amazing work! You were certainly brave spending time amongst that hustle and bustle! We were informed about these during our stay – we’ve just spent 5 nights at Linthwaite, with 3 of them including dinner – all the hard work clearly shows through in the exquisite food!!

Jo Hampson - Wonderful – really caught the essence of the kitchen – I could almost taste the food.
